Out of Many, One People.
Jamaica celebrates its 64th anniversary of independence on Thursday, August 6, 2026. Here’s where to eat, drink, and party with NYC’s largest Jamaican community — from the Grace Jerk Festival in Queens to cookouts and sound-system parties across Flatbush and Crown Heights.
The history
Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom on August 6, 1962 — after more than three centuries of colonial rule that began with Spain, passed to Britain in 1655, and was powered by the labor of enslaved Africans until abolition in 1838. Independence Day marks the moment the Union Jack came down at the National Stadium in Kingston and the black, green, and gold flag went up for the first time.
The motto “Out of Many, One People” reflects the island’s layered heritage — African, Indian, Chinese, European, and Indigenous Taíno. Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley, Louise Bennett-Coverley, Usain Bolt — the cultural reach punches far above 2.8 million people on a 4,244 square-mile island.
In New York, Jamaican immigration waves — the early-1900s Garvey era, the 1965 Hart-Celler Act, and the 1980s — built the largest Jamaican community outside the island. Flatbush, Crown Heights, and East Flatbush became the anchors. Independence Week in NYC is sound systems on front stoops, curry goat from aunties, and the flag flying off minivans down Nostrand.
